Sciatica
The Body Diagnostic is committed to helping you manage and alleviate sciatica pain, restoring your ability to perform daily activities with ease.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition we treat frequently at The Body Diagnostic. It’s not a diagnosis in itself, but a symptom of an underlying issue affecting the sciatic nerve – the longest nerve in the body. Sciatica typically presents as a shooting pain that travels down the back of the leg and it can range from mildly irritating to completely debilitating.
Some of the most common causes of sciatica include disc irritation, nerve compression, piriformis syndrome, or poor spinal movement patterns. In many cases, the pain stems from a combination of joint stiffness, muscular tightness and instability around the spine or hips that places pressure on the sciatic nerve.
What makes sciatica particularly frustrating is how it can appear without warning – and then linger for weeks, months, or even years if left unaddressed. That’s why identifying the true root cause of the nerve irritation is essential to creating an effective treatment plan.
What Are The Symptoms Of Sciatica?
Sciatica symptoms can vary in intensity and presentation, but most people describe a burning, tingling, or sharp pain that radiates from the lower back down into the buttock, hamstring, or calf. Some feel numbness or weakness, while others experience electric shock-like sensations when moving or changing positions.
Common symptoms include:
- Pain down the leg, often worse on one side
- Numbness and tingling in the buttocks, thigh, or foot
- Burning or sharp pain in the back or hip area
- Pain during sitting, especially for long periods
- Difficulty walking or standing upright
- Disrupted sleep due to nerve discomfort
- Pain flare-ups during driving, work, or everyday tasks
Over time, sciatica can dramatically impact your quality of life. It might start with occasional irritation, but can quickly escalate to avoiding exercise, cancelling social events, or struggling to perform your job. Many people also notice increased anxiety or frustration due to poor sleep and unpredictable flare-ups.
What Is Our Approach To Fixing/Treating Sciatica?
At The Body Diagnostic, we take a thorough, personalised approach to treating sciatica – one that goes far beyond the generic advice most people receive.
Many of our clients have previously visited their GP or NHS physio, only to be given basic painkillers or rushed through a short appointment with minimal guidance. Others try YouTube stretches, massage therapy, or even nerve medications, but the pain keeps coming back because the underlying issue hasn’t been fully addressed.
Here’s what makes our approach different:
✅ Step 1: Full Assessment
We start by ruling out any red flags and carrying out a detailed assessment to understand the source of your nerve irritation. Is it a disc issue? A muscle imbalance? A movement dysfunction? Understanding the “why” is the foundation of real recovery.
✅ Step 2: Hands-On Therapy
Next, we use hands-on treatment techniques to reduce tension, improve mobility, and take pressure off the irritated nerve. This helps relieve symptoms and improves movement right from the start.
✅ Step 3: Tailored Rehab Plan
Finally, we guide you through a custom rehabilitation programme, focused on strengthening the spine, hips, and supporting muscles – safely and progressively. This includes mobility work, postural training and exercises designed to prevent the problem from returning.
Rather than quick fixes or short-term relief, our goal is to help you recover fully – so you can walk, sleep, work, and move confidently again, without fear of flare-ups.
