What Is Neck & Shoulder Pain?

Neck and shoulder pain is a common issue we treat here at The Body Diagnostic. It’s especially prevalent among office workers and people who spend extended periods sitting at a desk, often without realising how much their posture and daily habits are contributing to the discomfort.

The causes of neck and shoulder pain are varied. One of the most common is poor desk posture, particularly from looking down at screens or slouching over a keyboard. Stress and tension are also major contributors – when we’re under pressure, we tend to hold tension in our upper shoulders and neck without noticing it. Other frequent causes include rotator cuff injuries, old sports injuries, and limited mobility in the upper spine and shoulder joints.

Whether your pain has been creeping in gradually or came on suddenly, one thing is clear: it can quickly affect nearly every aspect of your life – from sleep to work to exercise.

What Are The Symptoms Of Neck & Shoulder Pain?

The symptoms of neck and shoulder pain can range from mild discomfort to severe, limiting pain. Many clients describe a tight or stiff sensation across the shoulders, difficulty turning their head, or a constant dull ache in the upper back. Others experience headaches, pain when lifting or dressing, or a limited range of motion in the arms.

For some, the pain gets worse at night, disrupting sleep. Others feel it most while driving, working, or during overhead movements. It may even affect your ability to exercise, go to the gym, or complete simple daily tasks.

Over time, these limitations lead to fatigue and frustration. It’s not just about the physical discomfort – it’s about the impact it has on your lifestyle, your energy and your confidence. Clients often tell us they feel constantly aware of the tension in their upper body, and that it’s holding them back from doing the things they love

What Is Our Approach To Fixing/Treating Neck & Shoulder Pain?

The first step is hands-on treatment. We use manual therapy techniques to release tension, reduce stiffness, and restore mobility to the areas that are tight and causing you discomfort. From there, we move into postural re-education, giving you tools and awareness to prevent the issue from recurring.

But we don’t stop at symptom relief. Our team builds a progressive rehab plan tailored to your needs. This includes strengthening the muscles in your neck and shoulders, improving upper back mobility and addressing any spinal alignment issues that may be contributing to your pain.

This approach helps you build long-term resilience, not just feel better for a day or two. We also offer practical lifestyle advice, so you know how to adapt your day-to-day habits to support your recovery.

Many clients come to us after trying quick fixes like chiropractic adjustments, short massage sessions, anti-inflammatories, or YouTube stretches. While these may offer temporary relief, they rarely provide long-lasting results. That’s why our approach is built around education, progressive strengthening, and hands-on care – so you leave not only feeling better, but confident in managing and preventing future flare-ups.
